Subject: Support comprehensive sex education

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

Florida teens need our help! Our own teens are facing an epidemic of unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV/AIDS. It's our responsibility to make sure that Florida teens have the information they need to protect themselves - and that means information about abstinence and protection from diseases and pregnancy.

It is irresponsible to withhold information from teens that can protect them from unintended pregnancy and dangerous infections - and that may just save their lives. It's time to make sure that Florida teens have access to comprehensive sex education in Florida schools.

Comprehensive sex education gives teens the information, skills and encouragement to have open communication that leads to responsible decision making. Comprehensive sex education: - teaches abstinence as the only certain way to avoid pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections; - encourages family communication about sexuality; and - teaches skills for making responsible decisions, including how to avoid unwanted verbal, physical, and sexual advances and how not to make unwanted verbal, physical, and sexual advances.

The time has come for Florida sex education standards to ensure that all teens learn potentially life-saving facts from trusted and responsible sources. We know that too many Florida schools don't give students the facts they need. We need to change that.

The vast majority of Floridians (73%), myself included, support the comprehensive sex education. Please support policies that ensure Florida teens have access to the information they need to lead healthy lives.

Sincerely,

Background Information

We're facing nothing less than an epidemic in Florida - the rate of unwanted teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases is unconscionable.

We have the power to turn things around, but need your help. We need as many people as we can to tell their lawmakers that comprehensive sex ed is a matter of life and death.

Why not take a second to send this report card to your friends, family, and co-workers? Ask them to sign the open letter so their lawmakers hear from them too.
