This year the legislature is addressing a wide range of reproductive rights issues... From the “Prevention First Act”- A bill that helps women prevent unintended pregnancies and reduces the need for abortion... To the dangerous Parental Notification bill- A bill that will force young women to take drastic action to avoid telling their parents about an unintended pregnancy! Reproductive Rights Legislation for 2005 Session SUPPORT The Prevention First Act SB 2276 Filed by Senator Geller, the Prevention First Act helps women prevent unintended pregnancies and reduce the need for abortion. It includes two main components: comprehensive medically accurate sex education in our public schools & access to emergency contraception for rape victims. OPPOSE Parental Notification SB 1908 & HB 1659 Filed by Senator Dockery and Representative Kottkamp, both bills endanger young women’s lives by forcing young women to take drastic action to avoid telling their parents about an unintended pregnancy. They require parental notification 48 hours before a teen can have an abortion. Over-Regulation of Abortion Clinics Bill SB 1862 & HB 1041 Filed by Senator Dockery and Representative Bean, both bills over- regulate abortion clinics at a level so high that most abortion clinics would not be able to comply. This legislation is unnecessary because abortion clinics are already licensed in Florida and women are receiving safe, appropriate health care. The only purpose of this bill is to deny women access to safe and legal abortion by forcing clinics to stop providing services. Unborn Quick Child Bill SB 1526 & HB 233 Filed by Senator Baker and Representative Planas, this bill makes a so-called “unborn quick child” a person and undermines the 1973 Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade. “Unborn quick child” is a vague term that has no medical or legal definition but is used by anti-choice hardliners to describe certain fetuses. This bill provides that the termination of a pregnancy (or so-called “unborn quick child”) by injury to the mother in any other criminal action would be an act of murder in the same degree and constitute an additional crime. Our collective voice can make a difference.... Please join us in Tallahassee on March 29th and 30th! For more information or to RSVP in person please call FAPPA at 800-813-4290! |
