Many parents dread giving their child "the
talk". If you don't who will? What kind
of misinformation and myths will your child learn?
Make sure they have the information needed to make informed
decisions and to protect themselves in every situation.
For useful information on what to say and when to say
it, check out Planned Parenthood's Guide on How to Talk to Your Child
About Sex.
Phone Banking for
Health Care Reform
On September 22nd, Planned Parenthood hosted
phone banks across the state to urge Senator Nelson to oppose
ALL attacks on women's health care. We called upon
supporters help to make sure that Congress does not take away
critical health benefits for women. In just two
hours, callers at the West Palm Beach office spoke to 250
supporters and were able to connect almost 100 of them to
Senator Nelson's office.
For those who missed the phone bank,
it's not too late. We will be calling Congress on behalf
of women's health issues on October 13 & 27. Join

Real Sex
Education Week of Action

Planned Parenthood of South
Florida and the Treasure Coast raised awareness about the need
for Congress to fully fund medically accurate, age-appropriate
sex education for all teens during a week of action (September
28 – October 2, 2009) called Sex Education: Protecting Our
Future. Amid the news that the United States has
the highest rate of teen pregnancy of the most developed
countries in the world and that at least one in four teenage
girls has a sexually transmitted infection, Planned Parenthood
affiliates and Vox®: Voices for Planned Parenthood campus
chapters nationwide sponsored grassroots events and contacted
elected officials to urge them to fully fund sex education to
address these public health issues.

Latino AIDs Awareness
Day
October 15 is National Latino AIDS Awareness
Day. This day marks an opportunity to increase awareness of the
devastating and disproportionate effects of AIDS in the Latino
community. Latinos, who represent only 15% of the total U.S.
population, make up 18% of new HIV infections. Among Latinos,
men make up the vast majority of new HIV infections (76%), but
Latina women are also at disproportionate risk for HIV. Latinas
are infected with HIV at a rate four times greater than white
women. Take this opportunity to get yourself
tested. Click here to
schedule your appointment to get tested at a local health
center.
National Breast
Cancer Awareness Month
Breast cancer is a serious health
concern. It is a leading cause of death from cancer. About
180,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year in
the U.S. and 40,000 women will die from it. Breast cancer screenings, such as breast exams or
mammograms, help detect breast cancer in its earliest, most
treatable stage. These breast cancer detection tools can save
lives. More than 9 out of 10 women who detect breast cancer
early live at least five years — and many live much
longer. Click here to get more information or
schedule an appointment at a local health center.

Get Active
on Campus

Vox:Voices for Planned Parenthood is a program to
educate and mobilize students and young
professionals in support of reproductive health and rights.
Pro-choice students all over South Florida are educating their
university communities about reproductive health and rights, to
translate increased awareness into pro-choice activism on
campus, and to serve as a coalition partner to state, national,
and international reproductive efforts.
We are very excited to have
active chapters at three Universities in South Florida. To
get involved with a local chapter at Florida Atlantic
University, Florida International University, or University of
Miami click here.
