House Passes the Pregnant Women Protection Act!

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Oregon strongly condemns all acts of violence and especially acts against pregnant women who are particularly vulnerable.  Over recent weeks, there has been an outpouring of emotion due to the heinous crime committed against Heather Snively.  In light of the tragedy, Oregon's House of Representatives, along with Planned Parenthood Advocates of Oregon and NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon, created thoughtful policy protecting pregnant women in the event they are the victims of a crime.  Today, we are pleased to announce the Oregon House passed the "Pregnant Women Protection Act."  This bill enhances criminal penalties for crimes against pregnant women.  The bill will now move to the Senate where it is expected to pass.   Please contact your Legislator and thank them.

Subject: Thank you for voting yes on HB 3505-A

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

Thank you for your vote on the Pregnant Women Protection Act. Homicide is one of the leading causes of death for women of childbearing age, and murder is one of the leading causes of death for pregnant women.

Due to the increased vulnerability experienced by pregnant women, enhancing criminal penalties for these crimes is just and appropriate. We appreciate your effort in passing thoughtful, strong public policy that protects pregnant women without compromising women's civil liberties.

Sincerely,

Background Information

Why Pregnant Women Need Protection
Homicide is one of the leading causes of death for women of childbearing age.  And murder is one of the leading causes of death for pregnant women.  Worldwide, as many as one woman in every four is physically or sexually abused during pregnancy, usually by her partner.  Estimates of abuse within the US during pregnancy range from 3% to 11% among adult women and up to 38% among teenage mothers.

Planned Parenthood strongly condems all acts of violence and especially against pregnant women who are more vulnerable.  By supporting legislation that enhances penalties for crimes committed against pregnant women, we can focus on the harm suffered by women and their families who are victimized without setting a legal precedent that has the potential to undermine Roe v. Wade.
