Tell Congress: “Save birth control now!”

What if Congress passed a law that made the price of your groceries go up by 900 percent? There would be an instant uproar, and you can bet the problem would be fixed, pronto.

So why is Congress dragging their feet when a recent law has made the price of birth control skyrocket to unaffordable prices for millions of women? For the college students and low-income women most affected by this cost hike, that’s no small matter.

Planned Parenthood is asking people across the country to demand that Congress take action, and NOW. Fill out the form to the right to ask Senators Specter and Casey to be co-sponsors of the Prevention Through Affordable Access Act. We need their leadership!

As a leading proponent of protecting access to family planning services, I strongly urge you to co-sponsor the Prevention Through Affordable Access Act. Your support of this bill will have a major impact on the success of the effort to fix the birth control pricing problem.

Historically, Congress has expanded access to affordable prescription drugs for vulnerable populations by permitting pharmaceutical companies to offer low cost drugs to certain health care providers.  These savings are then passed on to the patients who need them most.

Since January 2007, more than 3 million college students and hundreds of thousands of low-income women have lost access to affordable birth control; sending the prices skyrocketing from $5-10 for a monthly supply to $40-50 per pack.  High prices are putting birth control out of reach for the college students and low-income women in need of family planning services to help them prevent unintended pregnancy.

That is why I am urging you to co-sponsor the Prevention Through Affordable Access Act, legislation that would make a no-cost technical fix to the DRA and restore safety-net and university clinics' ability to access low-cost contraceptives.  This will not coast the government a dime, but it will be invaluable to women's health.

As your constituent, I ask you to take a leadership role and co-sponsor this bipartisan legislation to ensure that affordable birth control pricing is restored this year.  Women cannot wait to have this mistake corrected.
