The short explanation of this alert was:
The Emergency Contraception Education Act will provide $10 million to implement important public education initiatives about emergency contraception (EC) and its benefits and uses to both women and medical providers. EC is FDA-approved as a safe and effective form of contraception. It is really just a specified dose of standard birth control pills. Medical research indicates that the sooner emergency contraception is administered, the greater the likelihood of preventing unintended pregnancy. Emergency contraception can decrease the risk of unintended pregnancy by as much as 89 percent. And yet, most American women have never heard of this important contraceptive option and most doctors do not tell their patients about it!
3,000,000 unintended pregnancies occur every year and half result in abortion. Emergency contraception, if used by all women who need it, could drastically reduce unintended pregnancies and the necessity for abortion. Support the Emergency Contraceptive Education Act and help break the silence about EC.
