What's At Stake?

Support Microbicides

Currently, only condoms can help protect against the spread of HIV/AIDS, but millions of women are unable to insist on partner fidelity or abstinence and cannot control condom use.

Microbicides, in the form of gels, creams or rings, could be used by women without the cooperation of a partner and could help prevent the transmission of HIV and other infections. They could also help women try to get pregnant without fear of disease, as they are being developed in both contraceptive and non-contraceptive forms.

The Microbicide Development Act would:

  • Ensure the coordination of scientific research and clinical testing of microbicides among all relevant federal agencies.

  • Help establish institutional commitment and allocation of resources that is vital to truly productive microbicide development.

  • Provide clear evidence to relevant governmental agencies that research on microbicides is a priority.

  • Ensure continued oversight of microbicide programs by Congress.

Safe and effective microbicides would help protect the human, reproductive and sexual rights of women worldwide. For more information, visit www.global-campaign.org.
