The short explanation of this alert was:

GOVERNOR CHRISTIE PROPOSES COMPLETE ELIMINATION OF FUNDS FOR WOMEN'S HEALTH SERVICES

Governor Christie’s FY11 state budget proposed the complete elimination of state funding for family planning services.  Last year, this budget line allocated over $7 million for basic reproductive health care services.  State dollars are not used for abortion services. This proposal hurts women and costs the state money.

Investing in family planning provides vital health care services to New Jersey’s families and cost savings to the state.

Why investing family planning just makes sense:

  • For every $1 spent on family planning services, $4 in Medicaid costs are saved.
  • In New Jersey in 2009, family planning agencies provided services to over 136,000 women and men.
  • Family planning agencies are often the gateway to primary health care services for low income and working families who would otherwise not seek traditional preventative health care.
  • There is a health care crisis in this country. Over one million New Jersey residents are uninsured and nearly 400,000 New Jersey women are in need of subsidized family planning services.

Each public dollar spent to provide family planning services saves an estimated $4 that would otherwise be spent in Medicaid-related costs alone.  So, for the money saved by eliminating state funding for women’s health care the state will pay at least $28 million more in Medicaid expenses.  It just makes no sense.  Take Action TODAY and weigh in with your legislators!!
