Now is the time to restore access to affordable birth control. This issue goes beyond simple economics -- millions of women and their partners nationwide are counting on the House to pass the bill to restore access to affordable birth control. The Senate has already stepped up and last week passed legislation to do just that.

Affordable birth control is a top priority. As Speaker of the House, I strongly urge you to treat it as such and make sure that access to affordable birth control is restored to college-age and low-income women immediately. I am asking you to represent me and the other women and men across the United States who support this commonsense measure. Ensure that this critical issue is not ignored or delayed any longer.

Due to a provision included in the Deficit Reduction Act (DRA), as of January 1, 2007, every college and university health center and hundreds of safety-net providers were unintentionally cut off from accessing low-cost birth control. As a result, women picking up their monthly supplies of birth control found that the cost had jumped from just $5-10 to $40-50 per pack, making it far more difficult to afford.

There is a no-cost fix to this problem that would restore the ability of safety-net providers and university clinics to access low-cost contraceptives.

More than 170 representatives and 35 senators have already cosponsored the stand-alone bill, the Prevention Through Affordable Access Act (HR 4054/S.2347). This legislation would not cost the federal government or state Medicaid agencies anything. It would merely allow drug manufacturers to offer deeply discounted prices to safety-net health care providers.

I urge you as Speaker of the House to demonstrate your support and leadership by correcting this mistake immediately and making sure that affordable birth control makes it to the president's desk. Increasing access to affordable birth control is a commonsense policy that will prevent unintended pregnancies and improve women's lives.
