Now is the time to restore access to affordable birth control. This issue is a matter of simple economics and plain common sense -- millions of women and their partners nationwide are counting on you and other members of Congress to protect their health and pass The Prevention Through Affordable Access Act (H.R. 4054 / S. 2347).

I strongly urge you to speak with congressional leadership this week to insist that access to affordable birth control be treated as a priority and restored immediately. As your constituent, I am asking you to represent me and the other women and men in your district who support this commonsense legislation.  Ensure that this critical issue is not ignored or delayed any longer.

Due to a provision included in the Deficit Reduction Act (DRA), as of January 1, 2007, every college and university health center and hundreds of safety-net providers were unintentionally cut off from accessing low-cost birth control. As a result, women picking up their monthly supplies of birth control found that the cost had jumped from just $5-10 to $40-50 per pack, making it far more difficult to afford.

The Prevention Through Affordable Access Act is legislation that would make a no-cost fix to the DRA, restoring the ability of safety-net providers and university clinics to access low-cost contraceptives.

The Prevention Through Affordable Access Act already has 170 cosponsors in the House and 35 in the Senate. This legislation would not cost the federal government or state Medicaid agencies anything. It would merely allow drug manufacturers to offer deeply discounted prices to safety-net health care providers.

Please demonstrate your support by speaking to congressional leadership and insisting that this mistake be corrected immediately. Increasing access to affordable birth control is a commonsense policy that will decrease unintended pregnancy at no cost to the government.
