Right now, a Supreme Court case could determine whether states can ban emergency care by ignoring a long-standing federal law — the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) — that requires hospitals to treat all ER patients with the medical treatment needed to preserve their life and safety.
