CUT REPRODUCTIVE CARE FROM HEALTH CARE REFORM

For the first time in history, we are on the verge of expanding access to affordable health care to every woman, man, and child in America. And thanks to determined support from people like you, all current versions of health care reform legislation include access to reproductive health care. We've come so far, and are so close — and that means that anti-choice groups are getting more desperate.

This week, every anti-choice group in the country is pulling out all the stops to derail health care reform. For example, right now, Catholics are being asked to contact their legislators, telling them to alter current health care legislation to include anti-choice amendments. The Catholic bishops have inserted letters into church bulletins and asked priests to include their call to action in their sermons — and even in their prayers — during Sunday services.

The House of Representatives is set to begin debating the legislation any day now, and the Senate will be watching the debate closely. The danger of an amendment succeeding is very real, and we have to act now. This is a crucial moment — if we can protect reproductive health care in the House bill, we'll be one giant step closer to real reform that protects women's health.

I am writing to urge you to stand up for women in the coming debate over health care reform legislation. The current House bill ensures access to reproductive health care -- and those protections must remain. As the full House moves to consider the health care reform bill, I strongly urge you to pass this crucial bill intact, and reject efforts to remove reproductive care from health care reform. Women should not lose benefits they currently have after health care reform. They should be better, not worse off.

Any efforts that keep health care out of reach for low-income families, or that impose additional costs or barriers for women, should be voted down. And any efforts that weaken a woman's right to choose -- including those that would keep women from choosing a health care plan or provider that offers the full range of reproductive health services, including abortion -- are fundamentally unacceptable.
