Tell the Bush administration to keep its word and stop efforts to redefine "abortion" to include birth control.

The Bush administration promised not to issue any new regulations after November 1. But now it's poised to implement a rule that could allow individual health care providers to redefine abortion to include the most common forms of birth control — and then refuse to provide these basic services. A woman's ability to manage her own health care is at risk of being compromised by politics and ideology. We need you to speak out now, before the administration implements this rule.

If the administration moves forward, the rule could wipe out dozens of state laws that protect women's access to basic reproductive health services. Tell President Bush: Keep your word. Stop the attack on women's health.

I oppose the Bush administration's rule

I urge President Bush and his administration to withdraw the Department of Health and Human Services proposed regulation that would allow health care providers to withhold complete health care information and services without regard for the needs of patients, and still receive federal funding. For any health provider to intentionally withhold information about widely embraced treatment options from a patient -- for any health condition -- is absolutely unconscionable under any circumstances. The federal government has no business funding providers who do not abide by this most fundamental standard of care.

This regulation poses a serious threat to our country's health care by limiting the rights of patients to receive complete and accurate health information and services from almost 600,000 health care entities that receive federal funding. For many of America's rural, low-income, and uninsured people, these providers are the only health care option available to them. With the economy stumbling and more and more Americans uninsured, this is the worst possible time for the government to deny our most vulnerable populations access to basic health information and necessary medical care.

The Bush administration promised not to release any new regulations after November 1. President Bush should stand by that promise and withdraw this rule now.

Sincerely,
