Contraception is basic health care for women: 95% of American women will use some form of birth control in their lifetimes. This basic healthcare is critical to preventing unintended pregnancy and improving women's health. Unfortunately, most insurance plans don't cover prescription birth control, even when they cover other prescription drugs such as Viagra.
As a consequence, American women on average pay $573 in out-of-pocket health care costs -68% more than men pay- mostly due to lack of insurance coverage for contraception.
Covering contraception helps to prevent even greater costs due to unintended pregnancies. In North Dakota, every $1 invested in family planning saves taxpayers at least $3 in health care costs. And contraception coverage would cost employers less than $25 per employee per year.
I support Planned Parenthood's efforts to protect women's health and ensure that all North Dakota women have access to affordable contraception.
