The short explanation of this alert was:

Let members of the House Judiciary Non-Civil Committee know how disappointed you are with this vote against women's health!

Yesterday, the House Judiciary (Non-Civil) Committee passed House Bill 147, a bill that requires a woman be offered the opportunity to view an ultrasound and listen to the fetal heart sounds before terminating a pregnancy. The true intent of this bill is to discourage and intimidate women into not having an abortion.

Thanks to some of our friends and supporters on the Committee, a provision was stricken from the bill that would have required women to have 15 minutes of "time out" to reflect on her ultrasound and her decision to terminate her pregnancy.

The bill also has requirements that women be given a list of free facilities where she may obtain an ultrasound at no charge. This is designed to divert women to "crisis pregnancy centers" to, again, discourage and intimidate a woman into not having an abortion. In addition, this bill makes no exception for victims of rape or incest.

Midway through yesterday's committee meeting, in an unprecedented fashion, Speaker Richardson, Speaker Pro Tem Burkhalter, Majority Leader Keen, and Majority Whip Fleming, ascended on the committee meeting to view its proceedings. Their presence was designed as a signal to Republican and Democratic lawmakers that a hard line as expected, rather than a more moderate approach.Their leadership tactics worked and the bill passed out of committee.

When will the Georgia Legislature stop harrassing women and start focusing on PREVENTION? Prevention measures are the best way to prevent unintended pregnancies, not unnecessary intrusions into the doctor-patient relationship. The Georgia General Assembly should focus on policies that help women prevent unintended pregnancies long before a woman enters an abortion clinic. These senseless proposals are not helping Georgia women access the education and services they need.

Please let the members of the House Judiciary (Non-Civil) Committee who voted in favor of this bill know that doctors, not politicians, should decide what information and care to offer their patients. Politicians who are sincere about reducing the need for abortion should focus on prevention, not intrusive legislation.
