Vox Takes a Stand on Health Care

You know what's going on: HEALTH CARE REFORM!

I won't bore you with long, drawn out explanations and delicately worded appeals. Instead, I say take this moment right now and take action!

Bottom line? There will be Health Care Reform legislation passed this year, therefore it is of the utmost importance that you get a word in edge-wise.

You can click here to write an email to your elected official, pick up your cell phone real quick and put in a call, or you could do both!

You don't have to be an expert on HCR to do either. Just be honest and tell your elected official what you think. Do you think there needs to be a public option? Do you believe women's health care should be included? Do you like the new "abstinence-only" funding?

Talking Points

Abstinence-only programs have been proven failures. As scarce as our resources are, we should be concentrating them on the most effective programs we can provide our youth.

Research tells us that youth who participate in abstinence-only programs are as likely to engage in sexual activity and have as many partners as their counterparts who do not. The only difference is that those who graduate the abstinence programs are 30% less likely to use protection.

Health Care Reform that works will include everybody. Don't play politics with our bodies, women deserve equal protection and equal coverage.

A public option would even out the health insurance market and give those who can't afford or don't qualify for private coverage a chance to purchase health care for their families.

First, I want to thank you for your hard work on Health Care Reform. I also want to let you know how I feel about this hotly contested issue.

As a college student, I have to face the fact that I won?t be on my parent?s insurance plan for much longer. As my graduation date nears, I see a country slowly rebuilding its economy and I fear that I may not land the perfect career position with complete health care coverage. So, a public option may be the only alternative for me and thousands of my peers across the country.

In addition, I am a young woman. My health care already costs more than my male counterpart?s. Please, don't penalize me because I was born female. Make sure this legislation covers all of me.

Lastly, I heard about the newest amendment to provide more funding for abstinence-only sex education programs. While abstinence is a worthy goal, we need to recognize the reality that many youth choose to "go all the way" and they deserve medically-accurate prevention information to protect them.
