Get Real, Indiana! petition

Are you one of the majority of Hoosiers who support comprehensive sex education?

  • According to a 2003 statewide poll conducted by Indiana University, 8 out of 10 Hoosiers believe Indiana public high schools should educate teens about how to use condoms.
  • In a 2003 poll of Indiana residents conducted by Ball State University, Hoosiers believe that school-based instruction about sexuality should begin in 6th or 7th grade.
  • Data gathered by Indiana University in 2004 indicate that nearly 90% of school personnel think that comprehensive sex education is effective.

Sadly, Indiana spent over $2.6 million (federal dollars) in fiscal year 2004 on abstinence-only-until-marriage programs that, in accordance with strict federal guidelines, limit what information students are taught.  Teachers are often not allowed to discuss other forms of contraception and disease prevention even when students ask directly about them.

Comprehensive sex education programs are designed to promote the overall health and well-being of each student by including information on a wide variety of sexual health topics, including abstinence, contraception, decision making, and communication. Demand a better approach to sex ed in our schools. Join Get Real, Indiana!

Background Information

Get Real, Indiana!

Truly honest sex education seeks to help all young people garner information and skills about taking care of their sexual health, and making responsible decisions both now and in the future.  This includes discussion of anatomy, sexual development, abstinence, pregnancy and disease prevention, relationships, gender issues, and body image.  It also includes life skills such as decision-making, assertiveness, critical thinking and communication.

Get Real, Indiana! is a growing coalition of individuals and organizations who believe that education is the key to a healthy and vibrant community. Schools have an opportunity and an obligation to give young people information in a balanced manner that teaches abstinence plus facts about contraception, reproductive health, relationships and responsible decision-making.  Comprehensive sex education is absolutely necessary for our youth to be able to avoid ignorance, unintended pregnancies, and sexually transmitted diseases.  It is the best way to give Indiana students the tools they need to make sound decisions about their own bodies and health.
