Health Care Reform Update!

On Saturday, November 7, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a historic health reform bill.  Unfortunately, the members of the House adopted an amendment to this otherwise laudable bill, which, if enacted, would effectively ban private abortion coverage for millions of women in the United States.  Named for its sponsors, the amendment is referred to alternatively as the Stupak-Pitts amendment or the Stupak amendment.

The Stupak amendment violates the central tenet of health care reform as articulated by President Obama: "If you are happy with your health coverage, you can keep it."  Currently, a majority of private health insurance plans cover abortion care.  But if your employer obtains your insurance in the future through the new exchange or marketplace, you will lose that coverage.  If Stupak becomes the law of the land, middle-class women will face barriers to reproductive health coverage unlike any they have experienced since the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion nationwide in 1973.

Watch our video and sign our "Stop Stupak!" online petition. Be sure you contact Senators Bayh and Lugar by calling their switchboard at (202) 224-3121. Tell our Senators to support a health care reform bill that protects women.  We have to be louder, stronger and more aggressive than the anti-choice groups if we want our voices heard in this critical debate.

We're working hard every day to make sure that all Hoosiers have access to birth control, sex education, and safe, legal abortion services.  With your help, we can make the voice for reproductive rights in Indiana even stronger.
