Greetings,
Planned Parenthood of Indiana (PPIN) is an official partner in
today's National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD) with the
purpose of increasing awareness in the Latino community of
Planned Parenthood as a primary, high-quality source of
sensitive care.
PPIN will have a presence during NLAAD throughout several
Indiana communities, including Gary, Seymour, New Albany,
Elkhart, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Lafayette and East Chicago.
PPIN will also be giving away vouchers printed in both Spanish
and English redeemable for free HIV/AIDS testing at its Fort
Wayne, Lafayette and Indianapolis-Southside health center
locations.
All PPIN health center locations provide free or low-cost
HIV/AIDS testing year-round. Testing is the essential first step
in linking people with HIV to medical care and ongoing support
to help them establish and maintain safer behaviors. PPIN needs
your support to continue providing these services. Donate now.
October 15th is the last day of Hispanic Heritage Month and
marks the seventh annual NLAAD. This year's NLAAD theme, "United
We Can Stop HIV and Prevent AIDS" speaks to the importance of
coming together to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic plaguing the
Hispanic/Latino population.
In the United States, HIV/AIDS has adversely affected
Hispanic/Latino communities. Hispanics/Latinos comprise 15.3
percent of the U.S. population, but the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention says they account for a staggering 24.3
percent of the new HIV infections in the U.S. Approximately 19
percent of Hispanics/Latinos in the United States are believed
to be living with HIV/AIDS.
The reasons for these disparities include limited access to
preventive care often due to cultural and language barriers and
even immigration status.
