Thank Senators Biden and Carper for their "no" votes on Alito

The U.S. Senate confirmed Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court on Tuesday, January 31st, despite his hostile record toward reproductive rights. While this is extremely disappointing, Planned Parenthood would like thank you for all that you have done in this battle -- contacting Senators, petitioning, sharing information with friends, attending events, and forwarding emails.  Everything you have done has made a difference, and we can take pride in the fact that our efforts influenced both Senator Biden and Carper to vote against Alito's nomination.

We spoke and the Senators listened.  Now, it is important to contact Senators Biden and Carper to thank them for their "No" votes on Alito.  Take a moment to called Senator Biden's office (302-573-6345) and Senator Carper's office (302-573-6291) or click below to send the Senators an email.

Subject: Thank you for voting "No" on Alito

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

Thank you for voting against Samuel Alito's nomination to the Supreme Court. As your vote acknowledged, Judge Alito is an unsuitable replacement for retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

I am deeply concerned that the Senate voted to confirmed Judge Alito, despite his long record of hostility towards women's, civil, and reproductive rights, and the fact that he refused to signal any change from this record during his confirmation hearings.

Now that Justice Alito has been confirmed to the Supreme Court, we ask that you increase your vigilance against anti-choice legislation that arises in Congress. We fear that we can no longer count on the Court to protect women from laws that would put their health at risk.

Thank you again for standing up for the individual rights and freedoms of your constituents by voting against Alito.

Sincerely,

Background Information

The US Senate voted to confirm Judge Samuel Alito as an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court on Tuesday, January 31st, despite his long record of hostility towards reproductive rights and personal freedoms.  During confirmation hearings, Judge Alito refused to distance himself from previous statements about his intentions to gut and eventually overturn Roe v. Wade.

Alito replaces Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court.  Justice O'Connor was a moderate voice on the Court who often acted as a key swing vote to protect women's health, safety, and rights, including the right to choose abortion.  Considering his extreme conservative philosophy, Alito could serve to swing the Supreme Court far to the right, threatening the health and safety of women.

While the Senate did vote to confirm Judge Alito, Delawareans can be very proud of our Senators.  Senator Biden voting against Alito twice: once in the Judiciary committee vote and once in the full Senate vote, and also voted in favor of a filibuster.  Senator Carper voted against Alito in the full Senate vote.
