Friend,

As I sit and write this email, it occurs to me that it is one year to the day that we changed the course of our nation and made history.  Now-President Obama, our country and the 56% of women who cast their ballots for Barack Obama set us on a new course.

And this year, 2009, was a banner election year for progressives, and for reproductive health and rights in Washington.

Up and down the ballot, with your help donating countless volunteer hours, making phone calls and giving your gifts of support, Planned Parenthood Votes! Washington was able to make a significant impact...resulting in wins in EVERY SINGLE race we worked on!

Here’s a snapshot of how the health and rights of women and families were protected in 2009:

Approve Referendum 71
While the results are still to be finalized, Approve Referendum 71 is leading 51% to 49%.  By approving this referendum, Washington State stood on the side of justice and equality. Our whole team across the state cared deeply about protecting all of Washington's women and families.  So did you, and it showed.

No on 1033
Washington just said NO to Tim Eyman’s disastrous scheme, by a margin of 55% to 44%!  With your help, Initiative 1033 was soundly defeated, meaning local and county governments will be able to continue providing vital safety net services - including family planning and reproductive health care.

Dow Constantine for King County Executive
We kept repeating it, and women voters in King County got the message: Susan Hutchison is a right–wing anti-choice conservative whose priorities don’t fit the values of King County voters.

This race was about protecting reproductive health services for low income women who depend on family planning clinics.  But, it was also about stopping Susan Hutchison in her tracks.  Dow won big: 58% to 42%!  According to the last Survey USA poll, "Women give a 3-to-2 margin to Constantine over Hutchison. The previous poll had the candidates split in that category."

Julie Anderson for Pierce County Auditor
We are committed to electing people to office who will defend people’s right to access a full range of basic, reproductive health care.  We believe it’s important to have an auditor who believes in these core principles counting the votes - especially in Pierce County, where statewide elections that impact reproductive rights hang in the balance. Congratulations to Julie Anderson, a former colleague of ours at Planned Parenthood Votes!, who won over anti-choice former state legislator Jan Shabro 49% to 41%!

Mike O’Brien for Seattle City Council, Position 8
Some say reproductive rights don’t matter in local races.  We beg to differ.  The city of Seattle partially funds Seattle King County Public Health, a department that provides family planning and abortion referral services to low income women.  And I can tell you that we depend on local city police for rapid response to protect the health and safety of patients and staff, and enforce sign, trespassing and other local ordinances.

That’s why we are thrilled that 100% pro choice city council candidate Mike O’Brien won handily over Robert Rosencrantz, 57% to 43%.

Some of what we were able to do---because of you!

Planned Parenthood field organizers across the state, and especially in Pierce County, worked directly with the Approve Referendum 71 campaign to make important voter contacts - including multiple phonebanks across the state every week.  Shout out to Aurora in Pierce and our whole statewide team!

Planned Parenthood field organizer Courtney worked tirelessly in Snohomish County with the No on 1033 campaign to make sure voters in this key swing county knew the dangers of I-1033.

70,000 calls were made and nearly 60,000 pieces of mail were sent to voters across the state for Approve Ref. 71 and No on 1033.

Volunteers made over 26,000 phone calls, we delivered over 50,000 phone messages and followed up with 20,000 pieces of mail to targeted pro-choice female voters to elect Dow Constantine King County Executive.

We carried out media efforts and produced a TV ad with our coalition partners to let people know about Susan Hutchison’s right wing, anti-choice ties.

Other wins:
Adrienne Fraley-Monillas for Edmonds City Council
Amy Ockerlander for Duvall City Council
Dan McShane for Whatcom County Council (currently leading by about 600 votes!)

On behalf of our entire team, THANK YOU for all that you did to make these successes happen!

We are proud to be able to stand with you to protect the health and rights of Washingtonians.
