CCPA Threatens Teens' Safety
Senator Frist has announced that the Senate will begin consideration of the Child Custody Protection Act (CCPA). CCPA will make it a federal crime for anyone other than a minor's parents --including grandparent, aunt, or religious counselor -- to accompany a minor across state lines to obtain an abortion unless the minor first complies with her home-state's parental involvement laws.
CCPA would further isolate abused teens by preventing them from getting the advice and support of a trusted adult. Sign the letter asking your senator to stand up for teen safety and stop this dangerous bill.

Subject: Support Teen Safety
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
The Senate will likely consider the Child Custody Protection Act in the coming week. I ask you to consider the risks involved in this bill. The government can not mandate parent child communication in every home particularly about difficult issues such as abortion. Bills like CCPA threaten the health and safety of teens.
Every parent hopes that their child will come to them when faced with a difficult decision, and in most cases the child does. In some cases, however, teens face abuse or neglect at home. How can we expect these at risk teens to feel safe turning to their parents with an unplanned pregnancy? Neither this bill nor any other can mandate healthy family communication or a loving, supportive environment in every home. CCPA threatens the health and safety of teens in abusive homes, faced with unintended pregnancies. It leaves these teens with no where to turn.
I urge you not to support this bill. Please stand up for all teens' safety, particularly the safety of those who struggle in abusive homes.
Sincerely,
|
