Congress supports failed program
Abstinence-only education has been a politically controversial subject in the United States for the past five or six years. The topic garnered nationwide attention in April when a widely-publicized federal study found that the administration-sponsored abstinence-only education program is ineffective at preventing early sexual activity.
Recently, several states have rejected the federal funding for abstinence-only programs. Even Congressional leaders decided to allow grants for mandatory abstinence-only, Title V programs to expire at the end of June. Therefore, we were taken aback on Thursday when the House Appropriations sub-committee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education made the first step to authorize a nearly $30 million increase in funding for abstinence-only education. Interestingly, the Appropriation sub-committee also approved a similar increase for Title X family planning programs. Our representatives seem confused.
Imagine what would happen if Congress did not ignore federally commissioned studies and the will of the American people. Imagine what would happen if Congressional leaders focused all of the money they are set to authorize for proven failed abstinence-only programs toward Title X and Prevention First programs instead. The House will most likely be voting on the funding soon. Therefore, we need to let our representatives know now that support for ineffective educational programs is unacceptable! Remind our legislators of the importance of strong support for programs focusing on prevention first and family planning. Contact Speaker of the House Pelosi and Appropriations Committee Chairperson Obey to express your disapproval of wasting money on abstinence-only education. Remind them to lead the way as true representatives of Americans.
