North Carolina Women United
Every Student Deserves a Safe Place to Learn!

NC Women United believes that all students have a right to a sound basic education, but too often, bullying and harassment interfere with that right.

Therefore, NCWU has included HB 1366, the School Violence Prevention Act as critical issue for Women's Advocacy Day 2008.

House Bill 1366, the School Violence Prevention Act, protects ALL students from bullying, regardless of whether they are Christian, Muslim, black, white, brown, gay, straight, girl, boy, fat, skinny, short, tall, rich, or poor. Physical appearance, sexual orientation, and gender identity are the three most frequent reasons for bullying and harassment in schools, yet these types of bullying are often overlooked by school personnel.

The inclusion of enumerated protected categories of students in House Bill 1366 is essential as they will provide clear direction to teachers, administrators, and students about the scope of the law.

This bill was introduced by Representatives Glazier (D), Fisher (D), Justice (R), and Stiller (R), along with 43 bi-partisan co-sponsors, passed the House 73-46. The Senate then passed a stripped, ineffective version of the bill. The House must reject these changes so a strong final version of the bill with enumerated protections can be adopted.

Subject: EVERY Student Deserves a Safe Place to Learn!

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

As a member of NC Women United and a participant in Women's Advocacy Day, I am writing to urge you to SUPPORT House Bill 1366 the School Violence Prevention Act.

Bullying and harassment in schools interferes with students' ability to learn and feel safe. If not addressed, bullying can push victimized youth out of school and into high-risk behaviors such as skipping school, dropping out, engaging in substance abuse, or worse.

The inclusion of enumerated categories in House Bill 1366 will provide clear direction to teachers, administrators and students about the scope of the law.

Please support House Bill 1366 and be sure the enumerated categories are included to protect ALL students from bullying and harassment.

Sincerely,
