North Carolina Women United
Support House Bill 44 and Save Lives!

NC Women United believes that all women and their families have the right to live in a happy, healthy and safe environment without fear of violence or the threat of violence.

Therefore, NCWU supports House Bill 44 Domestic Violence Orders/Repeat Violators as a critical issue for Women's Advocacy Day 2008.

House Bill 44 strengthens the enforcement of domestic violence protective orders and would ultimately save lives.

The proposed legislation would reduce the number of prior convictions required to charge an offender with a Class H felony for violation of a protective order from three prior convictions to one prior conviction.

In 2007 alone, 83 women, men and children were murdered in North Carolina because of domestic violence. Violation of a domestic violence protective order is a serious crime and is a red flag to the court system that the offender may commit a homicide.

Please ask your legislator to save lives in North Carolina by supporting House Bill 44.

Subject: Save Lives- Support HB 44!

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

As a member of NC Women United and a participant in Women's Advocacy Day, I urge you to support House Bill 44- DV Orders/Repeat Offenders.

This bill would simply reduce the number of prior violations of a protective order that an offender must have before he/she is charged with a Class H felony. A violation of a domestic violence protective order is a very serious crime and is a red flag to the court system that the offender may commit a homicide.

Did you know that 83 North Carolinians were murdered in 2007 because of domestic violence? Please support HB 44- this bill can save lives.

Sincerely,
