Women's Advocacy Day 2006
Take Action!
Join hundreds of women from across North Carolina on Tuesday, June 20th, for Women's Advocacy Day 2006, hosted by NC Women United. Women from across North Carolina will gather at the state capital to voice their support of the Women's Advocacy Day legislative agenda.
The Women's Agenda addresses various policy issues currently pending in the NC legislature, including access to health care services, reproductive rights, raising the minimum wage, preventing violence against women, and elections and lobbying reform.
We need your help to make our voices louder! If you can't join us in Raleigh(and even if you can!), please take a moment to join us "virtually" by emailing your elected officials today!
Please edit the letter below with your own thoughts and stories. Let your elected officials know you support the 2006 Women's Advocacy Day legislative agenda and ask them to do the same!

Subject: Support the Women's Advocacy Day agenda!
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
As your constituent, I urge you to support North Carolina Women United's legislative agenda, which advances the social, political and economic equality of women in our state.
Right now, 63% of all minimum wage earners in our state are women, many of them with young children. Raising the state minimum wage to $6.15/hour would greatly improve the lives of these families.
Affordable housing is a challenge even for those with stable work and moderate incomes; for women who are experiencing domestic violence, living with HIV or AIDS, or struggling with mental illness, it is even more out of reach. Please increase the Housing Trust Fund to benefit these vulnerable populations.
We want to increase the participation of women as voters, leaders, and decision-makers in the political process. Public financing provides candidates who choose to participate with an alternative to the constant money chase that dominates our elections and is particularly helpful to
women, people of color, and people from low-income communities who have historically been at a disadvantage in raising campaign money.
The NC Women's Health Services Fund provides state funding for family planning services to uninsured women not eligible for Medicaid. While the Fund has not been increased in 10 years, the population of eligible women has increased. Please keep the $200,000 increase in the House budget.
In North Carolina, 1 in 5 women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime. Please support increased funding for sexual assault and rape crisis services in North Carolina.
Sincerely,
|
