As a Planned Parenthood supporter, I support AB 98 (De La Torre) and request your signature on this important bill. This measure will ensure that maternity coverage is covered under all individual health insurance plans in California.
Individual health insurers are not required to include maternity services in health insurance policies they offer. As more employers are dropping health insurance for their employees, insurance companies are increasingly targeting this young, uninsured segment of the market with plans that do not cover pregnancy care.
Almost half of all pregnancies are unintended; therefore many women who buy insurance without maternity coverage may still need maternity services. Lack of insurance will result in women not getting sufficient prenatal care. A woman with late or no prenatal care is 3 times more likely to have a premature baby. The average cost of each premature birth is $75,000 to $130,000 per delivery.
Maternity coverage is basic health care coverage. It is critical that we ensure all health insurance plans in California include maternity coverage.
