As a Planned Parenthood supporter, I support AB 119 (Jones) and request your signature. This measure would end gender discrimination in the individual health insurance market by stopping insurance companies from using gender as a reason to charge women higher premium rates.
Women earn $.77 to every $1 earned by men. Even without the discriminatory practice of gender rating, women still use a higher proportion of their income to purchase health care coverage. As fewer employers provide health care coverage, more women will need to purchase individual coverage and many will find that they are unable to afford enough coverage.
Since women have less buying power, it can be especially difficult for a woman to purchase health care coverage. Allowing insurers to charge women more means affordable health care coverage can be completely out of reach.
This bill is one step toward making sure that women and men can afford health insurance coverage. Equal access to health care coverage is vital to making sure women can care for themselves and their families.
