PPSO Legislative Priorities Breast and Cervical Screening Funding: Stabilize funding for critical cancer screening for low income women. Oregon currently provides screening for only 7,000 of the estimated 40,000 women in need of subsidized exams. Improve Quality of Sex Education in Schools: Work with coalition of state and non-profit agencies to create accountability around the newly revised sex education statute that requires comprehensive sex education in public schools. Push for better teacher training and comprehensive, multi-grade curriculum. Oregon Family Insurance Bill: Support a 1 cent per hour payroll tax to provide reimbursement for individuals who need to take family leave. Paid Family Leave Insurance will allow for up to six weeks of paid time off after the birth or adoption of a new child, or when a family member is seriously ill. By providing partial wage replacement, many low- and moderate-income families can be at home during the crucial first months of a child’s life or to take care of a family member who has a life-threatening illness. To learn more go to the Oregon Paid Leave website. Health Care Reform in Oregon: Ensure that women and teens can access the full range of reproductive health benefits as a part of health care reform in Oregon. Preventative health care, including family planning is imperative to any reform effort, especially during these tough economic times.
