Planned Parenthood E-Newsletter: July 2009

Dear Friend,

You'd think it's a goal that everyone can agree on: Health care reform should leave everyone — women, men, and families — better off than they are under our current broken system. It seems like such an obvious point, but some lawmakers seem dead set on using health care reform to undermine existing benefits.

They want to cut community health care providers — like Planned Parenthood — out of health care reform. That would mean that thousands of women would lose access to the health care providers they know and trust.

I wish it could go without saying, but it seems that some lawmakers need to have it spelled out: Health care reform should not result in women being worse off than they are today. Click here to tell Congress that women's reproductive health care MUST be part of health care reform.

Sincerely,

Cecile Richards, President
Planned Parenthood Federation of America

Q: What would be wrong with making teens ask their parents for permission to use birth control?

"Between a Woman and Her Doctor"
Martha Mendoza, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and mother, tells the unforgettable story of her choice — and how it was limited by the laws and culture of the times: the United States in 2004. "'You can't just dump these patients on us,' she shouted into the phone, her high-pitched voice floating through the heavy curtains surrounding my bed. 'You should be dealing with this yourself.'" So-called "Crisis Pregnancy Centers" Spread False Info
It's a scientific fact that abortion does not cause breast cancer. But that hasn't stopped so-called "crisis pregnancy centers" from telling women that it does as part of their ongoing campaign of deception. Scare tactics like this one and other disturbing discoveries are documented in a joint project of RH Reality Check, the Feminist Majority Foundation, and Stuart Productions. Birth control methods are not one-size-fits-all. A method that's perfect for one woman may not be right for another. That's why Planned Parenthood created My Method, an online quiz to help women choose from the variety of birth control methods available. Take the quiz today. »

15 and Counting
In 1994, 179 governments agreed to a visionary plan to give universal access to sexual and reproductive health care and information to improve the sexual and reproductive health of everyone by 2015. People born at the time of that agreement are 15 years old today, and too many of their governments have failed to make good on their promises. Limiting Infections
Planned Parenthood's new study on reducing infections resulting from abortion was published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) this month. From The New York Times: "Planned Parenthood found that after the combined changes were made — switching from the vaginal to the buccal route and routinely giving antibiotics — infection rates dropped considerably, to 0.06 per 1,000 abortions, from 0.93 per 1,000."
