Greetings,
On June 22nd 2009, the Modesto City School Board
voted 4-3 to take the first step to assure teen's access
to confidential medical services without the consent of a
parent or guardian. The sensitive services include
sexual assault or rape counseling, mental health and substance
abuse treatment, and access to reproductive health services.
The Board's preliminary action has not been
finalized and requires one more vote and the school
board members need to know that their courageous work on this
important issue has community support. We ask that
you remind all members of the School Board that you support
them.
Please send an email to Modesto School Board Members
before Monday's meeting and let them know you support the policy
recommended on June 22nd and you want them to adopt the final
policy soon.
We suggest the following message:
Dear Board member:
I support the June 22nd decision of the Modesto City School
Board to adopt a policy which complies with California law and
allows students to access confidential medical services for
their health and safety. We encourage that students involve
their parents but also want to assure that students also can
access confidential services when parental involvement is not an
option in some families and delaying access could harm the
health of students. We urge you to protect student's access to
sensitive medical services.
Thank you,
Your name
Once you have done so, please also alert
Janalynn Castillo at janalynn_castillo@ppmarmonte.org that you voiced your concerns to the board
members.
If you are also able to attend Monday's meeting
to voice your support under the Public Comment period,
please consider doing so.
