Subject: Please Vote No on HB46

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I just heard about HB46, a dangerous bill that you may vote on next week. Please vote NO on HB46.

This bill is opposed by the domestic violence community because it will place abused women in greater danger and insults women by declaring them incompetent to make decisions for themselves when faced with an unintended pregnancy.

This is blatant government intrusion in the doctor/patient relationship.

As your constituent, I ask that you support women's health and vote NO on HB46.

It is time the legislature stopped meddling in women's reproductive health care decisions and started focusing on preventing unintended pregnancies through better access to birth control and comprehensive sex education!

Sincerely,

Background Information

HB46 would:

·         Violate the first amendment right of free speech and create the crime of “coercing an abortion” if, for example:

o        The husband files, attempts to file, or threatens to file for divorce

o        A husband, partner or family member withdraws, attempts to withdraw or threatens to withdraw financial support from or on behalf of the woman

o        A husband, partner or family member changes, attempts to change, or threatens to change the woman’s existing housing or residence

·         Allow the charge of coercion to stand even if the woman did not actually seek the abortion, or was not in fact pregnant in the first place!

·         Make physicians—or anyone assisting them—criminals for helping women obtain an abortion “with knowledge” that the woman has been “coerced” under this new, overly broad definition of ‘coercion’ even if the woman has freely consented and believes this is the best decision for herself based upon her circumstances.

·         Require new and burdensome requirements in the ‘informed consent’ process—not necessary for health or safety reasons.

·         Require posting of signs in clinics that carry false promises of state-backed assistance in carrying a child to term and caring for that dependent child once born.

·         Require providers to offer and provide a risky experimental anesthesia to certain women.
