PPGMR's Health Educators Bring
Medically-Accurate Sexuality
Information to Memphis City
Schools
Improving access to medically accurate sexuality education is
one of Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region's most
important goals. New outreach activities and partnerships are
helping us meet that goal.
On February 16, 2009, PPGMR
held a 3-hour training session for Memphis City Schools nurses
commissioned by Superintendent Kriner Cash and Memphis City
Schools Administration. It was a first step in developing a
collaborative partnership that will ultimately benefit Memphis's
110,000 city school students.

Oppose the Constitutional Amendment to
Ban Abortion in Tenneessee
On May 18, 2009, the Tennessee General Assembly
passed Senate Joint Resolution 127. SJR 127 is a dangerous and
deceptive measure to amend Tennessee's Constitution. It could
eliminate a woman's right to abortion with no exception for
women who are victims of rape, incest or whose pregnancies
endanger their health.

Benefit Performance of Eve
Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" is a Sell-Out
PPGMR's Director of Development Shoshana Creech
and Nurse Practioner Leah Smith were among the cast of a
sold-out benefit performance of The Vagina Monologues
at the Circuit Playhouse on March 18, 2009. The Obie-Award
winning show is based on interviews with more than 200 women
about the memories and experiences of sexuality. This
particular performance of The Vagina Monologues is unique in
that it included a performance written especially for
transgender women, read by Darlene Fike, who is herself a
transgender woman. This was the first time that particular
monologue has ever been performed in Memphis.
