Protect Family Planning Funding in FY2010

Investing in family planning provides vital health care services to New Jersey’s families and cost savings to the state.

As the state struggles with an unprecedented economic down turn, we must continue to adequately support New Jersey’s family planning services.  These programs provide basic health care services to so many New Jersey women and men, many of whom have recently lost their jobs and/or their health insurance.

Please take a moment to ask your legislators to continue New Jersey’s investment in family planning in the FY2010 state budget.

Subject: Protect Family Planning Funding

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

As a New Jersey voter, I urge you to fully fund family planning in the FY2010 state budget.

Last year over 131,000 patients were served by family planning agencies throughout New Jersey. These important health services helped prevent 25,000 unintended pregnancies and over 10,000 abortions. And, as a result the state saved well over $94 million in one year!

In these tough economic times, many New Jersey women and their families are struggling not only with job loss, but also with loss of health insurance and access to affordable basic health care. Please help us to continue providing valuable reproductive health care by fully restoring funding for family planning in the State budget.

Sincerely,

Background Information

Why investing family planning just makes sense:

  • For every $1 spent on family planning services, $4 in Medicaid costs are saved.
  • In New Jersey in 2008, family planning agencies provided services to over 131,000 women and men.
  • The Guttmacher Institute found that more than six in 10 women who obtained care at a family planning center in 2006 considered the center their usual source of medical care.
  • There is a health care crisis in this country.  Over one million New Jersey residents are uninsured.
  • Over one million New Jersey women are in need of subsidized family planning services.
