Urge Congress to Protect Breast Cancer Patients!

A woman fighting breast cancer may need a mastectomy, a procedure that removes part or all of a woman's breast in order to remove cancerous breast cells/tissue.  Mastectomies are invasive surgical procedures that can save a woman's life, but can also result in a painful and lengthy recovery period.

Insurance companies in the U.S. are trying to make mastectomies an outpatient procedure - forcing women, against their wishes and those of their doctors, to leave hospital beds only a few hours after surgery, groggy from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached.

The bipartisan Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act in Congress would end this practice of  "drive-through" mastectomies by requiring insurance companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy.  The U.S. House has already passed this critical legislation in the fight against breast cancer, but it still needs your support to make it through the U.S. Senate!

Send the message below - today - and urge your Senator to support the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act.  It is vital to restoring patient and consumer rights to breast cancer patients and their families.

Subject: Support S 688, The Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

As your constituent, I urge you to support the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act (S. 688), which would end the practice of "drive-through" mastectomies for women affected by breast cancer.

Currently in the U.S., insurance companies are not required to cover adequate hospital stays for patients undergoing this invasive surgical procedure. Because of this, many insurance companies are seeking to make mastectomies an out-patient procedure - forcing women to leave hospitals only a few short hours after surgery, in pain and groggy from anesthesia.

Breast cancer patients need protections from this unscrupulous practice to ensure they have enough time to properly recovering from a mastectomy. S. 688 would require insurance companies to cover a minimum 48 hour hospital stay for these patients, giving these women the humane and fair treatment they deserve.

Please end these unethical insurance practices and stop "drive-through" mastectomies forever - help pass the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act of 2009.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
