Protect Women's Health in Health Care Reform

Congress's efforts to reform our nation's health care system could  improve the lives of women, men, and families everywhere.  You'd think this is a sentiment everyone can agree on – but some lawmakers are using health care reform to undermine existing women's health benefits.

There is pressure for Congress to exclude reproductive health care (and not just abortion care) from health insurance plans – restricting women from preventive care, such as Pap smears, and denying them access to the trusted providers of their choice.

Women cannot be worse off under health care reform than they are today.  Reproductive care must be included in any covered plan and women must be able to access that care through community providers they trust.

Send the message below today and urge your Congressmember to put women's health above politics, and ensure reproductive health care and those who provide it are included in health care reform efforts.

Subject: Protect Women's Health in Health Care Reform

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I urge you to protect and prioritize the health of women as you work towards health care reform. It has come to my attention that Congress is under pressure to exclude reproductive health care, including abortion care, from reform plans and to limit a woman's ability to choose health providers she trusts.

Health care reform without full access to reproductive health care is no reform at all. Millions of women depend on reproductive health services and the essential community health centers that provide such care to plan their families and stay healthy.

American women cannot afford to be worse off under health care reform than they are today. Health care reform should INCREASE access to health benefits, not decrease access.

I strongly urge you to defeat efforts to exclude coverage of comprehensive, preventive reproductive health care and essential community providers from health care reform.

Sincerely,

Background Information

Currently millions of Americans have no health insurance or are underinsured.  Many people rely on essential community health centers, like Planned Parenthood, to receive preventive health care.

Unfortunately, opponents of women's health have begun lobbying Congress to exclude the full range of reproductive health care services (and the organizations that provide such care) from health care reform efforts.

Health care such as contraception, Pap smears, and sexually transmitted infection testing must be insured under any national health care system.

A recent poll found that anti-choice efforts to restrict reproductive health care access (including abortion care) are in direct opposition to the views of most Americans.  Nearly 75% of voters surveyed support requiring health insurance plans to cover women's health care services, and 66% of voters support coverage for abortion care in health plans.

Additionally, the poll found two thirds of voters want independent medical professionals and citizens, NOT politicians and insurance companies, to determine what medical procedures and benefits to insure.
