Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth face unique challenges related to their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. Nationally, 75% of LGBTQ high school students report feeling unsafe in their schools, 90% cite verbal harassment due to their sexual orientation, and two-thirds report harassment linked to their gender expression. In this training, participants will explore basic gender and sexual orientation terminology and broaden their awareness of how homophobia and heterosexism negatively affect youth. Participants will also discuss techniques for creating a safe school or agency environment respectful of all genders and sexual orientations. Lastly, the training will allow participants to practice communicating positive and inclusive messages about gender and sexual orientation.
