With the popularity of handheld technology devices, youth can be bombarded with media messages, many of which reflect a one-dimensional view of what it means to be a man or a woman. As service providers and caring adults, how can we teach youth to challenge these limiting and unhealthy images? This training will cover contemporary media messages about sexuality, the impact of those messages on youth, and interactive group activities that youth-serving professionals can use to teach young people how to become critical viewers of media images/messages. At the end of the training, participants will be able to: describe the impact of media on youth, identify the sexuality messages promoted by media, and lead exercises to teach youth how to become critical viewers of media (media literacy).
