During this time of changing political climate and shrinking resources, service providers have to do more than just run programs. Advocacy and lobbying skills can influence policy changes and garner the backing needed from legislators to sustain programs. After all, even supportive legislators are not mind readers – you have to ask for what you want. PPNYC and its activists are on the frontlines in New York City, Albany, and Washington, D.C. We work hard to pass laws that protect and expand access to reproductive health care and sexuality education, and to block bills that undermine sexual and reproductive health – and we've been succeeding. Come and learn from the experts! This training will include an overview of city and state legislative processes, how policy decisions are made, and what points in the legislative process you can influence. We will also discuss the importance of lobbying and effective lobbying techniques. We will end the training with “grassroots organizing 101” and provide you with strategies for how to build community support around your issues.
