Tell State Lawmakers to Make Smart Budget Cuts

Dear friend,

Please check out the below message from our sister organization in Albany and take action today!

As the autumn leaves fall at the State Capitol, so do state revenues. This means less funding for all programs -- including family planning programs.

Governor Paterson has called the Legislature back to Albany for a special session to reduce state spending. We recognize the need to do more with less, but that should not mean devastating budget cuts to vital women's health care services.

Without your action today, cuts to core health care programs could happen as haphazardly as leaves fall to the ground. There is no rhyme or reason for the proposed across-the-board cuts. And there is no regard for funding programs that actually save essential services and save the state money.

Lawmakers need to understand several crucial points:

Important 90/10 match For every $1 the state spends on Medicaid family planning services, the federal government reimburses the state 90 cents.

1 saves 4 For every $1 the state spends on Medicaid family planning services, $4 is saved in future costs.

ACT NOW! Contact legislative leaders today to urge smart choices as they grapple with the state budget deficit. Strategic, selective cuts will reduce state spending and make this autumn and winter less devastating to women and families who already find themselves in dire circumstances.

Best,

M. Tracey Brooks

Subject: Make smart decisions about budget cuts.

Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],

As a supporter of Planned Parenthood and Family Planning Advocates, I urge you to make smart decisions about state budget cuts. Preserve funding that will save essential services and save the state money. In making reductions, please keep in mind:

IMPORTANT 90/10 FAMILY PLANNING MEDICAID MATCH. For every $1 the state spends on Medicaid family planning services, the federal governement reimburses the state 90 cents.

1 SAVES 4. For every $1 the state spends on family planning services, $4 is saved in future costs.

The proposed cuts jeopardize family planning centers' ability to provide core health care services in our communities.

I urge you to make strategic cuts that preserve vital family planning health care services. Families are working to make ends meet, and they need to know that they can still receive great health care from local community health centers like Planned Parenthood.

Please work with health care providers to make cuts that preserve vital reproductive health care services and save the state money.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

What's At Stake:

Did you know that more than 6 in 10 patients who receive their care at a women's health center, like Planned Parenthood, consider it their primary source of health care? And 1 in 4 women receives contraceptive care at a community health center like Planned Parenthood.

If the proposed budget cuts go through, many of these woman could lose access their health care provider or their ability to receive reproducitve health care.

Strategic cuts can be made to save family planning services in our communities, but we need to act now to make sure our elected leaders work hard to find solutions to the state budget crisis.
