Women's Health Matters in Health Care Reform

Congress is working right now to come to agreement on health care reform legislation. FPA's role in this reform process is to ensure that comprehensive reproductive health services remain available for all women and families. This is a critical time when Members of Congress need to know your views on this important issue. We need your help to send the message to Congress that Women's Health Matters!

Anti-choice forces and lawmakers are continuing their dangerous attempts to halt our efforts, threatening to take away women's access to essential services like cancer screenings, contraception and abortion and to limit access to essential community providers.

Time is of the essence. The public and Congress need to know that millions of women across the country depend on essential community health centers for their reproductive health care and, in many cases, for their primary health care.

Writing a letter to the editor of your local papers can have a big impact. And, sending a letter is easy. In just a few clicks you can send a personalized letter to your local newspaper. Please take a moment to help spread the word about how important it is to include essential community providers in health care reform.

Make it personal. Feel free to include a line in your letter identifying your role in your community, such as: "As a young woman in this community..." or "As a volunteer..." or As a physician..."

Background Information

In Congress, more than 30 amendments have been introduced to health care reform legislation that would undermine women's access to important reproductive health services, putting patients' health in jeopardy and taking away benefits that they currently have today.

Comprehensive reproductive health benefits may be on the chopping block in the Congressional debate over health care reform.

Women's health must be a priority. Any health care reform plan must ensure access to reproductive health care and community health centers that provide this care to millions of Americans.

Essential community health providers are a critical entry point into the health care system for millions of Americans.

Women should not be worse off after health care reform than they are now.
