Washington, DC — The Planned Parenthood Action Fund today congratulated Niki Tsongas on her successful win in Massachusetts’ fifth congressional district. Tsongas will be “a champion for women’s health,” said Action Fund President Cecile Richards. Planned Parenthood endorsed Tsongas earlier this year.
“I’m so pleased that a fighter for women’s health care and a champion for pro-choice causes like Niki Tsongas will enter the halls of Congress. I know she’ll work to make sure birth control is accessible and affordable, that young people are taught real sex education, and that women and their doctors are able to make private medical decisions without government interference,” said Richards. “That’s the kind of pro-choice leader we need in Massachusetts and in Congress.”
Planned Parenthood worked on behalf on Tsongas, endorsing and contributing to her campaign and encouraging activists to support her race. Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts (PPAF) also sent volunteers to campaign for Tsongas in the waning days of the election.
“As the lone woman in the Massachusetts delegation, and the first woman to represent the state in Congress in 25 years, Niki will be a strong voice towards increasing access to basic health care like birth control and ensuring that sexual health matters in Massachusetts. Planned Parenthood congratulates her on her victory and we look forward to a great working relationship,” said Dianne Luby, PPAF president/CEO. |
