Birth Control Protection Act

June 7, 2005 marked the 40th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision, Griswold v. Connecticut, which recognized the constitutional right of privacy by giving married people the right to access birth control.

In recognition of the historic Griswold anniversary, the Birth Control Protection Act was introduced to protect patient access to safe, legally prescribed birth control. Urge your elected officials to co-sponsor this important bill!

Subject: Co-sponsor the Birth Control Protection Act

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I urge you to co-sponsor the Birth Control Protection Act [AB 532].

Anti-birth control legislators are trying to restrict access to birth control. Every day we hear more stories about women being denied their birth control pills at the pharmacy counter. Over half of all hospital emergency rooms still do not provide rape victims with emergency contraception. And there are dozens of anti-women's health bills being pushed in the state legislature.

The Birth Control Protection Act requires that a pharmacist fill safe, legal birth control prescriptions and clarifies that contraceptive methods should never be included in the definition of abortion under Wisconsin law.

Birth control is basic health care for women. Over 90% of American women use some form of birth control during their lifetimes. Without access to birth control, the average woman would have between 12 and 15 children in her lifetime. Limiting access to birth control unnecessarily puts women at risk for unintended pregnancies.

Please support and co-sponsor the Birth Control Protection Act.

Sincerely,

Background Information

  • Birth control is basic health care.
  • The ability to plan and space healthy, wanted pregnancies helps build strong, healthy families.
  • The protection of birth control signaled a giant leap forward for women’s health and safety, for families and for society.
  • More than 95% of women use birth control at some point in their lives.
  • Increased and enhanced use of birth control has reduced unintended pregnancy and the need for abortion.
  • It is absurd for pharmacists to suddenly refuse to dispense birth control pills that have been legal for 40 years.
