Stop the UW Birth Control Ban

Urge Your Representative to Vote NO on the UW Birth Control Ban!

The UW Birth Control Ban (Assembly Bill 343) would ban health care providers at UW campus health centers and on all UW property from prescribing, dispensing or advertising birth control to adult female students, including emergency contraception to rape victims.

Subject: Oppose the UW Birth Control Ban/AB 343

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I am deeply disturbed by AB 343, the UW Birth Control Ban, and urge you to vote against it when it comes for a vote on the Assembly floor.

The bill is an outrageous attack on basic health care and would needlessly put women at risk for unintended pregnancy and abortion by barring their ability to access basic birth control.

AB 343 is so vague that it would ban all forms of hormonal contraception at UW and unconstitutionally discriminates against women. This bill also interferes with the patient-doctor relationship and abridges women's constitutional right to access birth control.

Additionally, the UW Birth Control Ban denies rape victims access to pregnancy prevention following an assault. One out of six college women have been raped or have been the victim of an attempted rape during the past year. These women deserve immediate and comprehensive health care, including access to emergency contraception, following an assault whether they access their health care on or off campus.

Decisions about health care, including birth control, should be left up to adult women and their health care professionals. Please oppose AB 343.

Sincerely,

Background Information

Vote
The full Assembly will be voting on AB 343 Thursday.  Listen to the floor debate and vote live by Clicking Here.

AB 343 is Unconstitutional
This bill violates over 40 years of Supreme Court decisions establishing that access to birth control is a fundamental right.

Discriminates Against Women
AB 343 violates principles of equal protection because only women are denied their prescriptions.

Birth Control is Basic Health Care
Birth control is part of providing basic health care services to women. 95% of sexually active women rely on oral contraceptives at some point in their lives.

Patients' Rights Violated
This bill violates a patient's right to know and receive all their health care options and interferes with the doctor-patient relationship, putting women's health and well-being at risk.

It's Outrageous! The Words of LeMahieu...
The bill's author, Rep. Daniel LeMahieu (R-Oostburg), has stated that this bill is needed because access to birth control gives "young college women the tools for having promiscuous sexual relations."
