Because you are such an important advocate and friend to Planned Parenthood, we wanted to share some breaking news with you regarding our efforts to restore nonsurgical abortion services at Planned Parenthood. Since the enactment of Wisconsin Act 217 eight months ago, nonsurgical abortion using medication has been unavailable to women at Planned Parenthood health centers in Wisconsin. Today, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin has filed a lawsuit in federal court in an effort to resume women's access to this noninvasive abortion option to our patients.
We are going to court to stand up for our patients. We are asking the court to end the unconstitutional provisions of Act 217 that block a woman's access to safe and legal nonsurgical abortion services and to restore a woman's ability to make her own personal, complex medical decisions.
Since the enactment of Wisconsin Act 217, nonsurgical medication abortion, a safe and noninvasive abortion method available to women within the first 9 weeks of pregnancy, has been unavailable to women at Planned Parenthood. Because of this law, women ending a pregnancy must now undergo a more invasive surgical option instead.
Medical professionals, not politicians, should be determining the safest and best medical care for Wisconsin women. Women should be able to make personal decisions about the best medical options available to them. We are in court to make sure decisions about pregnancy in Wisconsin once again belong to a woman, her family and her faith, with the counsel of her doctor.
As a leading provider of women's health care in Wisconsin for 77 years, Planned Parenthood is committed to providing women with quality health care services without judgment. We look forward to restoring women's access to safe and legal nonsurgical abortion services in the near future.
Thank you for your continued support and advocacy to ensure women and men have access to the essential information and medical care that makes them safe, healthy and strong.
