Petition to Oppose the Bills to Defund Planned Parenthood
The Planned Parenthood defunding bills seek to re-prioritize the federal family planning dollars distributed through the state, re-directing dollars to health departments first and family planning providers, like Planned Parenthood, last.
We, the undersigned Ohioans, oppose the Planned Parenthood defunding bills because:
For nearly 80 years, Planned Parenthood has been a trusted health care provider in Ohio. Their history means that they have the experience and the infrastructure in place to provide high-quality services to high-need patients at a lower cost than other providers. More than 96% of what Planned Parenthood does in Ohio is to provide essential lifesaving cancer screenings, breast exams, birth control, sex education and counseling to nearly 100,000 women and families, regardless of one’s ability to pay. In early 2012, Quinnipiac University released a poll showing 60% of voters oppose efforts to defund Planned Parenthood. When told that the federal funding is being used only for non-abortion health issues such as breast cancer screening, opposition to defunding Planned Parenthood rises to 77%. In these difficult economic times, families need more access to affordable health care, not less.
